ARC Review : Captive by K.M. Fawcett (Sci-Fi/PNR)

Book Blurb

The last thing Addy Dawson remembers is a blazing inferno and freezing river water overtaking her lungs. When she awakens, Addy finds herself on a strange, alien planet, trapped in a cell with no doors, no windows-- and to her horror-- a naked warrior who claims to be her mate.

An alpha gladiator, Max is forced to breed and produce the finest specimens for the Survival Race, a deadly blood sport created by the alien rulers of Hyborea. To rebel means torture-or worse-yet Max refuses to become the animal his captors want him to be. But their jailors will not be denied, and soon Addy and Max find themselves unwilling players in this cruel game. Pushed to the limit, they will risk everything for the chance at a life free from captivity. And though fate brought them together as adversaries, Max and Addy will discover that when they're together, there's nothing in the universe that can stop them .

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is an interesting sci-fi story.  Addy is evacuating people from a forest fire when she gets out to check something, they steal her expedition.  She is stranded out in the forest with a wildfire bearing down on her.  She runs and jumps in the river, fighting the rapids to save her life.  Just as she gets slammed against a rock and is losing consciousness, she reaches out to someone to pull her out.

She wakes up in a strange room with a strange naked man.  She is shocked and angry.  She bombards him with questions, who is he?, where is she?, why is she here?  The man is a human gladiator named Max.  He is there to impregnate her.  She is no longer on Earth, and now a human pet. She is expected to bear children, her sons with be trained as gladiators and her daughters will have the same fate as she has.
Addy is furious and refuses to accept this as her fate.  She turns away from Max and he refuses to rape her.  He is taken and punished and she is placed in a Yard.  A yard is where the pets are kept.  Addy learns that she died in the river and the aliens reawakened her, in other words brought her back to life.  She learns all she can from within the Yard.  She plans to escape even when she finds out she is pregnant.  How can she be pregnant, unless Max lied and had sex with her when she was unconscious.  Her anger grows and she blames him for her condition.  Even being pregnant doesn’t stop her plans, she has to escape.  The Alpha gladiator in her Yard is Ragan.  He is determined to break her spirit and looks forward to the fight.  He wants to dominate her and loves the challenge she presents.

Max fears for her humanity and decides to help her escape.  After he loses his position as alpha gladiator over all human gladiators to Ragan, he has nothing to keep him safe.  He knows the way and how to survive.  He will find a safe place for Addy, knowing she would have difficulty with her pregnancy, and then he will continue the long trek to the refuge.  The escape is dangerous and hard.  With Ragan on their trail and dreaded poachers waiting to capture them, they flee.  They don’t trust each other, but find a way to survive.
The journey and fight for freedom that Addy and Max embark on is intriguing.  I liked how the author portrayed their relationship.  Addy is younger but seems to be the more understanding one.  Max believes himself to be a beast and no longer human.  His battle within himself is fascinating.  Both characters have a depth and how they work together makes the story.  The aliens and world that Addy was thrust into was a bit confusing, but it fades into the background when their journey begins.

I would give it a 4 out of 5 for the characters.
