Sixteen-year-old Kayla plans to spend her summer hanging out on the beach in Santa Barbara and stealing whatever she wants, whenever she wants it. Born with the ability to move things with her mind — things like credit cards, diamond rings, and buttons on cash registers — she has become a master shoplifter. She steals to build up a safety net, enough money for her and her mom to be able to flee if her dad finds them again. Well, that, and the thrill of using her secret talents.
But her summer plans change when she's caught stealing by a boy named Daniel — a boy who needs her help and is willing to blackmail her to get it. Daniel has a talent of his own. He can teleport, appearing anywhere in the world in an instant, but he lies as easily as he travels. Together, they embark on a quest to find and steal an ancient incantation, written on three indestructible stones and hidden millennia ago, all to rescue Daniel's kidnapped mother. But Kayla has no idea that this rescue mission will lead back to her own family — and to betrayals that she may not be able to forgive... or survive.
Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Kayla lives with her mother Moonbeam. They have been living in hiding for as long as she can remember. Her father killed her older sister Amanda and Moonbeam fled with Kayla. They have moved and changed their names many times to stay safe. They have been in California for the last eight years and Kayla likes her life. Her best friend Selena knows her secrets. She knows about her family and her powers. Kayla can move things with her mind, not large things but with precision. She has been practicing in private and testing herself. If Moonbeam knew she would flip out. She isn’t supposed to use her powers. Her father could find her. However, Kayla wants to be ready if her father finds her. So using her power is her safest bet for now.
When a strange boy approaches her and calls her by name, her biggest fears come to light. Her father has found her. However, the boy, Daniel, is there to get her help finding his mother who has disappeared. They are thrown into a search for three magical stones hidden by a Mayan Prince.
Daniel and Kayla are in a race against time to reach them first before the kidnappers. Along the way Kayla learns that her family has been keeping secrets, even her mother has lied to her. Her life has been built on lies. Her life will never be the same and she doesn’t know who to trust.
I really liked this book. The storyline was packed with adventure, intrigue and magic. Kayla was a strong female character that is willing to do the right thing. She is determined and independent. Her attitude and gumption make the story. The author filled the story with interesting characters that Kayla interacted with as the story unfolded. It added to her decisions and actions.
The author also provided a story that is shocking with an Indiana Jones twist which I loved. I enjoyed the story from beginning to end. I recommend it to any reader. I give it a 5 out of 5.
