Review: The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood #13) by J.R. Ward

Book Blurb

Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward.

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice...

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

The attack on Wrath backfired and the council was disbanded then Wrath was voted King. Things are settling down a bit so Wrath meets with his people personally to hear their problems and worries. The brothers protect Wrath as he performs his duties.

The Lessers are rebuilding and the Bastards haven’t been making any noise lately. Layla has been meeting with Xcor to keep her bargain and the Brothers safe. Unfortunately her feelings for Xcor are confusing and her guilt is growing. Her pregnancy is continuing and she is under constant care of Doc Jane.

As a result Selena has been helping to feed the Brothers that need the service from a Chosen. She is hiding a big secret. She is suffering from a mysterious disease that affects a small amount of the Chosen. Her body will seize up and she will forever be trapped inside her own unmoving body until she dies. She hides it and wants to say good bye to the male she loves.

Trez has bonded with Selena but refuses to admit it. It will never work. He is destine to mate with the Shadow Princess. However he can’t keep lying to himself and when Selena has an episode and her disease is discovered. He puts everything on hold in order to care for the female he loves.

Doc Jane and Manny rush to find treatment and a cure for Selena. Revh and IAm search the Sympaths’ and Shadows’ archives for any mention of this mysterious disease. As Trez spends time with Selena, IAm puts his life in danger at the Territory but meets the first woman that remotely interests him.

Rhage is struggling with his own guilt and Selena’s disease. Life must continue even though the shadows struggle with what their lives are throwing at them.

I love the Brotherhood series. In fact I have read them all. This book really dug into the secrets of the shadows. They have been an enigma since they were introduced. The mystery they presented was intriguing and I was finally happy to learn their story. I loved every part of this book except Selena’s outcome. It was a sad journey and I would find myself crying like a baby at some parts of the story. As for IAm, he had an exciting twist of fate which was unexpected. The shadows as people were brought into the light to be examined by the reader. Their beliefs and rituals almost bordered on barbaric. It was fascinating.

I love the series. This was a great book. I really liked the parts of the story and there was a part I hated. I still recommend it and give it a 4 out of 5.
