Review: Yield the Night (Steel & Stone #3) by Annette Marie

Book Blurb

After surviving a round-trip to hell, Piper figures she can survive anything. After all, she just lived through the devastating loss of her Consul apprenticeship and a torturous stint at boarding school. How much worse could it get?

Well, she wasn’t expecting a group of crazy radicals to burn her home to the ground and take her prisoner.

The Gaians, a.k.a. the crazy radicals, plan to rid Earth of daemons and they need Piper’s help. In exchange for her cooperation, they promise her the answer to all her problems: magic. With her own magic, she could reclaim her apprenticeship, the only future she’s ever wanted. But her magic comes at price — it could kill her.

With the life she’s always known crumbling around her and her future slipping from her grasp, she needs Ash’s help one more time. But the greatest danger of all lies within her, and no matter what she does, she may lose everything — including him.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

In the third book of the Steel and Stone series, Piper comes back a day early to celebrate her birthday.  When she gets home no one is there.  A couple of daemons including Kindra and a haemon.  She is a bit hurt when neither her father nor her uncle are home.  After she goes to her room and finds a secret message she is guessing from Lyre, an explosion rocks the building.  The consulate starts collapsing and fire consumes part of the building.
Piper is able to escape and get Kindra out.  They fled to safety but are confronted by those behind the attack.  Piper is shocked when she learns who is behind it all.  She is taken prisoner and comes face to face with her mother.  Her mother wants her to join the Gaians.  They have plans to regulate daemons.  Piper is tempted but turns them down.  She knows it is suicide to unlock her powers.
The ultimate betray occurs when it is done against her will.  Ash and Lyre come to her rescue.  The race is on staying away from Samuel’s assassins and finding a way to save Piper before her unleashed powers kill her.
I love this series.  Piper almost lets her loneliness get the best of her but came through.  I feel bad about how she ended up in her current situation.  No one really wants her or they want to use her.  I am rooting for her from the start.  I love her relationship with Ash.  They are an odd couple but they are there for each other.  The wrench is Ash’s sister.  She is hostile and thinks Piper is a bad influence.
The tension between the two women is thick and the boys are clueless.  Piper is strong and trying to survive her situation.  Ash comes to protect her.  In the end when she figures out what she is and how she feels, she makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect the ones she loves.

I can’t wait to see what happens next.  This was a great read and addition to the series.  I give it a 4.5 out of 5.
