Book Blurb

Knowledge Changes Everything…

Hoodoo-influenced Southern Louisiana seems like the perfect place for Camille to escape her abusive past and dysfunctional family. She doesn’t expect to fall in love with the handsome Gavin Devereaux and plummet into the world of Amaranth, a place of exile for reformed vampires.

Wrestling to escape a deadly ex-boyfriend while giving Gavin a chance, Camille is confronted with decisions that threaten not only her life, but the lives of her inhuman friends she has come to love. Entangled in her friends’ quest for freedom, she dives into their realm and faces the threats of Amaranth’s ruler—the mother of all vampires—and her own inner demons.

Now Camille must decide whether she will derail her life and make the ultimate sacrifice for the monsters that interrupted her bumpy path back to sanity—what she still wants so desperately—or escape with Gavin before it’s too late for both of them.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Camille Hart is visiting Paris for her birthday alone.  She left her abusive relationship behind.  By chance she meets Gavin Devereaux at a CafĂ©.  He encourages her to move there.
A year later she is living in Louisiana working at a bookstore and trying to get away from Andrew.  She is disgusted with herself.  She left one abusive relationship in Seattle for another one here.  Andrew scares her but she needs to get away from him.  Her friend Audrey visits and is livid when she finds out.  Camille needs to go to the police.  She promises to when Audrey leaves.  Relieved with a plan Camille comes face to face with Gavin again in her bookstore.  She is surprised to see him.  She accepts an invitation to dinner.
The instant connection she felt in Paris is still there.  They continue to spend time together and Camille is falling hard.  However, Andrew confronts her when she is with Gavin, everything changes.  Things aren’t what they seem.  A new world is opened to her as her life is now in danger.
This is the first book in a trilogy.  I love how Gavin and Camille met.  It was comical and sweet.  The author brings them back together at a great time for Camille.  He is exactly what she needs.
Camille as a character was probably my least favorite.  I prefer strong women as my heroines.  She was not one, in my opinion.  She avoided situations instead of confronting them head on.  She was also more dramatic than I like.  Her reactions resulted in eye rolls from me.
The author has her angry and judgmental once she knows what is really going on.  Then she takes it upon herself to get involved without really understanding what is going on.  I really wanted to shake her.

I liked the relationship she had with Gavin.  He was sigh-worthy when it came to his attention to her.  He isn’t what he seems which is intriguing.  The author keeps giving subtle hints as the story progresses until the secret comes out.  The secret wasn’t what I expected but I liked the story even more when all was revealed.  It was a pretty good read.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
