Review: Havoc (Mayhem #4) by Jamie Shaw

Book Blurb

When Hailey Harper left her family farm to enroll in veterinary school, she had a plan: keep her head down, ace her classes, and most importantly… don’t upset the uncle paying her tuition. Translation? Don’t piss off his dramatic, self-absorbed daughter, Danica, even if she’s a nightmare to live with.

Falling in love with her cousin’s rock star ex-boyfriend was definitely not part of the plan.

As the drummer of a now-famous rock band, Mike Madden could have any girl he wants. He’s sweet, funny, romantic, talented—and the only guy that’s ever made Hailey’s heart do cartwheels in her chest. The more she gets to know him, the harder she falls, but Hailey knows they can never be more than friends… because Danica wants him back, and she’ll fight dirty to win.

Mike is falling for Hailey too, but Danica’s threats and his rock star life—music video shoots, international tours, obsessed fans—could tear them apart before they’ve even begun. Hailey isn’t sure she’s the one for him, but Mike’s waited years for a girl like her… and he’ll do anything to prove it.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Hailey is attending college and living with her cousin Danica.  She has to put up with Danica’s hatefulness as Hailey’s uncle is paying for everything.  He pays her tuition, rent, bills and pretty much everything. With that being the case, she finds herself in the mosh pit at Mayhem watching the band The Last Ones to Know with Danica as she tries to get her ex-boyfriend’s attention.  She also ends up outside in the cold in front of their tour bus, then spends the night playing video games waiting for Danica.  She ends up playing games with Mike and having a great time.  They end up playing games on-line and becoming friends.  Hailey hides their friendship knowing that Danica will make her life hell.
As time goes on Mike and Danica continue to date, Hailey realizes she is falling for Mike.  She has to stop it.  Danica could kill her dreams with one phone call.  However her efforts go wasted as she takes care of a sick Mike and helps the band with their new video.  When Mike goes on tour for two months, Hailey has to make a tough choice, Mike or her future.
I love this series.  I’ve read them all so far.  I was waiting for Mike’s story.  You know it would be epic.  Hailey was sweet and strong most of the time.  I hated how passive she was with Danica because of her fear.  I hated reading those parts.  I wanted her to stand up for herself.  I also wanted to punch Danica in her hateful mouth.  The author tortures us with Hailey refusing to tell Mike any of this.  There were many occasions in the book where I wanted to shake her.
The overall story was a good one.  Mike dating one girl but falling for another, the right one, was quite a ride.  His friends embraced Hailey immediately and included her in their circle.  Even Leti appeared.  He is one of my favorites.  I was happy to see him.

The author has created a whole cast of great characters in this series and they all were present in this book.  It made it even more fun to read.  The reader feels included in this group as the story evolved.  The author also came through in the end.  I waited for Hailey to stand up for herself and she finally did with flare.  It was excellent!  I give this book a 4 out of 5. LOVED it!
