Review: Inhale (Just Breathe #1) by Kendall Grey

Book Blurb

Strangers in reality, inseparable in dreams…

After years of suffocating under her boss’s scrutiny, whale biologist Zoe Morgan finally lands a job as director of a tagging project in Hervey Bay, Australia. Success Down Under all but guarantees her the promotion of a lifetime, and Zoe won’t let anything—or anyone—stand in her way. Not the whale voices she suddenly hears in her head, not the ex who won’t take no for an answer, and especially not the gorgeous figment of her imagination who keeps saving her from the fiery hell of her dreams.

Gavin Cassidy hasn’t been called to help a human Wyldling in over a year, which is fine by him. Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. That is, until he’s summoned to protect Zoe from hungry Fyre Elementals and learns his new charge is the key to restoring order in the dying Dreaming. He never expects to fall for the feisty Dr. Morgan…nor does he realize he may have to sacrifice the woman he loves to save an entire country.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

In this Just Breathe novel, Zoe studies whales.  She is finally the director of a research collecting study trip.  She needs to prove herself in order to gain the Vice President promotion she desperately wants.  She has to show Randy she can do it. She has also been having strange dreams.  In one she was rescued from drowning by this hot guy.  Then in another she meets this person made of water being chased by people made of fire.  She also sees her rescuer whom she names Perfect.  Little does she know she is in the Dreaming and the Fyre Elements are attacking humans in the Dreaming.  Sentinels like Gavin, aka Perfect, work on saving humans in the Dreaming.
Gavin is struggling as a Sentinel.  He is out of balance.  He lost his water after the death of his partner Serena.  When he rescued Zoe something changed.  He started calling her his muse.  She started bringing back water.  He refused to find her in Realis fearing Scarlet and the Fyre elements would hurt her.  He knew she was important to him.
Little did both know how important she would prove to be.  Her part in the upcoming battle between the Fyre and the Sentinels is vital.  Gavin is desperate to keep her safe but his plan to do that isn’t going the way he wants.  The Fyre know who his muse really is.
This book was very interesting.  The storyline was extremely unique.  I liked the elemental angle with the Sentinels protecting humans.  I also thought the author created the Dreaming as the battleground as a newer concept.  It was fascinating to see the story evolve.  Both characters saw each other in the Dreaming but had no idea who they were in real-life.  In fact they’ve never met face to face.  I can see how Zoe didn’t trust it.  It was just a dream after all.  It was interesting to see her question her sanity on several occasions.  She being a scientist has a difficult time just believing something without proof.  The struggle was there for the reader to see.
Then seeing Gavin as a rock star in the Realis and an unsure Sentinel gave him depth and vulnerability.  I thought they truly were a good match character wise.  I also like that Zoe is older than Gavin but it works.  She panicked when she found out who he really was.  It was fun to read.
I know that the story is just beginning and she is now a target.  It will be interesting to see where the author takes the story from here.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
