Toot's Review

Alright, well, wow, just freakin’ wow! I just finished Maya Bank’s new book Mastered and OMG is it a page-turner. Not that I don’t love all of Maya’s books, I mean come on…KGI, serious love here for the woman but I think I might have found a new favorite. First, before we even get started, let me tell you this because I want to warn you…..you have to try this book but it is a cliffy. Maya states in the back of the book that she had every intension of Drake and Evangeline’s story to only be one book but it spilled into two and that when the second one is finished, the page count alone will be more like three. I just wanted to warn you dear reader because some people don’t like them and I totally understand but the next and last book to this couple’s love story will be out in a few months, so don’t fret. Now with all that being said let me give you a bit of a synopsis in my own words and then I’ll give you more of my thoughts, so bear with me.

So Mastered is the first in Maya Bank’s new series called The Enforcers. The first book centers around Drake who is the center of his own universe, Master of his domain which he has built from the ground up. He demands ultimate control over everyone and everything in his world. As anyone in his position, he has numerous ventures going at once and he oversees all. One of his favorites being his club Impulse. It’s a speakeasy/dance club/sex club all rolled into one and some would say the base of his numerous operations. Here he lords over his kingdom and nothing happens without his knowledge until one night when an innocent, fresh-faced angel enters his domain.

Evangeline is a hard-working, innocent, southern gal who’s been transplanted to the big city with her three high school friends with the promise of better earning wages then she can make in her small town. She has become the bread winner in her home due to her family falling on hard times. She had to drop out of high school and is now waitressing to scrimp every penny she can to send back home so her family can survive. The last thing she needs is an ex-boyfriend who is spreading rumors about her being as frigid as a snowdrift because he’s a worthless spineless scum who prayed on her innocence but when her friends band together and convince her to dress up, show up at his favorite club to show him what he threw away and will never have again, she agrees and what was supposed to be a night of getting her dignity back becomes a date with destiny and the man who will change her world forever……..

Yeah what an opening, right! Well needless to say, Drake owns the club that Evangeline goes to and he falls instantly for her but Drake falling for you isn’t what you think. Drake wants to own you like he owns everything. He will give you everything if you give him everything in return. He will make your parents very comfortable. He will buy your friends off, so they aren’t “burdened” by your absence. He will completely submerse you into his world and take you over completely until your arrangement is no longer beneficial but he won’t cut you off completely, no he’ll leave you with a comfortable life, just without him. Yep, this is the arrangement he proposes to her and believe it or not, she accepts but like any great alpha male/dom story, he gets wayyyyyyy more than he bargained for. He not only consumes her but she does the same in return. What started out as a dom/sub arrangement quickly becomes more, deeper. He promised her that he would never do anything to hurt her until he does something so despicable that he risks losing the love of his life forever.

What I loved about these characters is that Drake is probably one of the most arrogant alpha males I have EVER read. I wanted to jump through the book and b1tch-slap him, hard! I was so outraged at times for Evangeline that I wanted to throw on some feminist combat boots and march in a parade for her (which I have never done but that’s how passionate the character made me). But what was equally as great was Evangeline. At first you think when you meet her “oh great another doormat heroine” but seriously sister, she is not! Every time Drake goes all high-handed on her, she says exactly what a normal woman in the real world would say. For example, Drake arranges to see Evangeline the next day at 7PM but doesn’t give her any room to rebuff. So she ignores the order because duh, she has to work. So when she gets off at 4am, Drake’s driver/henchman is waiting for her. He not so gently gets her into the car and whisks her to Drake. Now normal books have this as a romantic rendezvous, not Maya or Evangeline, she starts pulling at the handle, screaming she’s being kidnapped and threatening that her roommates will call the cops. Even when she arrives in front of Drake, she makes sure she calls her friends to tell them what’s what and people……….that is reality and truth in writing that’s refreshing!

Anywho, I loved the book. Gobbled that sucker up in one night!!! I loved the character play, the alpha male with his high-handed assh0leness and the sweet, wholesome goodness that brings him down but don’t get me wrong, this book is full of hot sexy steam, BDSM play, master/slave/dom/sub relations and the BIGGEST d1ck move I’ve ever read to end on a cliffhanger. When an uber alpha screws up, boy can they do it in a blaze of glory. The man is going to have to crawl through glass, have scorpions poured on his balls to sting him in all the right places, have Mike Tyson read the dictionary to him and be dragged behind Danica Patrick’s car before he can even hope for any forgiveness. Can’t wait for the next book to see this man get his comeuppance.

4 stars!
