Review: A Shade of Vampire (A Shade of Vampire #1) by Bella Forrest

Book Blurb

On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.

A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Sofia is angry with her best friend Ben when he forgets her birthday. She walks along the beach alone to lick her wounds. Unfortunately a stranger comes up to her, checking her out. He tells her she is stupid to be walking alone.

The next thing she knows she is locked in a room chained to the wall. She comes face to face with her captor when he threatens her. He turns out to be a vampire named Lucas. Lucas wants to claim her but she is reserved for his brother Derek, the prince. Derek has been asleep for 400 years and it is now time for him to awaken.

When Derek finally wakes, he is surprised. He wanted to sleep forever. He can’t face what he is. He is confronted with his brother and sister. His sister, Vivienne, tests his control immediately by presenting him with the human girls they have selected for him. His eyes immediately go to Sofia. She is beautiful but she also comforts the girl next to her. Derek sees her humanity and is drawn to her. After their initial encounter, he decides she will be his personal slave. He wants to be near her and he is determined to protect her.

Sofia is determined to escape and even tries but fails. Derek comes to her rescue on more than one occasion. She comes to trust him. Unfortunately her life is threatened by Lucas and Sofia fears who Derek will choose. Then when her best friend Ben appears in the Shade, everything changes.

This was a good book. It portrays vampires in a dangerous light. They enslave humans. They kidnap them from their human lives. Sofia is kidnapped and you are along for the ride. This story is told by both points of view according to Sofia and Derek. I liked this approach. It shows you what both main characters are thinking and feeling.

You can’t help liking Sofia immediately. She is resourceful and strong, a survivor. She is good at reading people which helps her with Derek. She picks up on things no one else does.

Derek is a great character. He is placed in this situation against his will but excelled at protecting his family and his people. Now back he has to fulfill the prophesy in order to bring peace to his people. He isn’t happy about it and then Sofia knocks him on his vampire butt. He is completely taken by surprise of his feelings for her. It’s cute to watch him flounder. I can’t wait to read what happens next. I give this first book a 4 out of 5.
