Review: Elemental Magic (Elemental Magic #1) by Angela Wallace

Book Blurb

Charmed meets The Last Airbender
Aileen Donovan wants nothing more than recognition as a scientist by her supernatural community. What better way to do that than to solve a mystery involving a power-hungry alchemist, hallucinogenic coral, and a homicidal sea dragon? The hard part will be working with Coast Guard officer Colin Benson—until the tides turn, and Aileen realizes that love and duty may not be mutually exclusive.

Full Summary:

Aileen Donovan is an oceanographer with magical control over the element of water. While her normal focus is on research and fighting poachers, she's about to go up against the stuff of legends--and that's saying something for a supernatural.

A transport ship is missing and everyone's eager to get their hands on the cargo. No one knows what exactly it is, but when fragments resembling coral begin to drive local residents insane, Aileen suspects a preternatural source. Whatever is at the bottom of the ocean, a power-hungry alchemist wants it, and releases a sea dragon to eat the competition--literally.

Aileen sees this as an opportunity to win the professional recognition she desires, but keeping secrets is complicated when she's working with local Coast Guard officer Colin Benson. Her sense of love and duty will be put to the test, and when the tide washes out, it might have been better if that lost ship had stayed lost.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Ailene is a water elemental and is working for the Stewartship.  She works for the Undina Research Center as a physical oceanographer.  Her friend Colin works for the Coast Guard and asks Ailene to help find a ship that has recently sunk.  She does her calculations for Colin, then she is confronted by Mr. Irons.  He owns the ship and also wants her help finding it.  He wants to get to the cargo before anyone else.
Ailene is suspicious.  She gets a bad feeling about Mr. Irons.  Then a strange coral is found from the wreakage.  It is nothing they have ever seen.  Ailene, her brother Keenen and co-workers start questioning what is really going on.  They realize something supernatural is happening.
Some shocking discoveries are found and Ailene is surrounded by danger.  Her life is forever changing as her ideas of who she is and what she wants come to light.
This book had an interesting storyline.  I love stories about elementals.  So I was ready to jump in from the beginning.  Ailene is not your normal leading heroine.  She isn’t perfect and finds her abilities difficult at times.  I didn’t like that she hid away instead of dealing with things.  The author forced her to do so with the situations that she was placed in.  Her insecurities really got in her way.

She was an awesome character by the time the story came to an end.  The fight scenes were cool to read.  Water was the main weapon Ailene used.  There were some jaw dropping surprises. I wasn’t expecting the one about Ailene’s family.  The cause of the boats sinking was also a surprise, a very paranormal twist.  The author keeps you enthralled in the story.  A great read that I give a 4 out of 5.
