Review: Reap the Shadows (Steel & Stone #4) by Annette Marie

Book Blurb

Piper is feeling a bit overwhelmed. With Seiya and Lyre missing, Ash recovering from near fatal injuries, and the Gaians picking fights with daemons all over the city, a girl can’t help but think she might be in over her head. And this time, she’s on her own.

Before she even has a chance to investigate the Gaians’ new stockpile of mysterious, high-tech weaponry, an old enemy ambushes her: Samael’s henchman Raum. He wants Ash’s help and won’t take “get lost” for an answer. She doesn’t know if she can trust Raum, but even more than that, she can’t trust herself with Ash. Sooner or later he’ll catch up to her, and she fears she won’t be able to walk away from him a second time.

Despite her feelings, it will take their combined strength to face a frightening discovery about the Gaians. She and Ash begin to realize that the daemon war is coming to Earth, and they might be the only ones who can stop it—if it’s not already too late.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

In book four in the Steel and Stone series Piper left Ash behind to heal as she goes in search of Seiya and Lyre.  Her feelings of guilt are overwhelming.  She has to fight her own battles instead of Ash putting his life on the line for her.  She joins her father and uncle who are in hiding as the Gaians invade the city.  There weapons are suspicious.  They seem to be fused with magic.  Piper wonders who is supplying them.  As she and the others are trying to help Daemons by getting them out of the city, she is confronted by Raum.  He wants to know where Ash is.  She refuses to tell him and ends up with the responsibility of Kiev.
When Ash shows up his anger is obvious.  He ignores Piper and centers his attention on Kiev.  Piper knows it is for the best but the pain is almost more than she can handle.  Things get more dangerous once they rescue Lyre and Seiya.  The Ra have infiltrated the Consulates.  Samael may be behind the Gaians attacks.  Ash and Piper have to work together and stop both sides.  They seem the only ones that believe the truth.
I love this series.  It keeps getting better and better.  Piper and Ash seem to be a doomed couple from the beginning.  There is too much happening around them and they are almost a forbidden couple.  That makes the story a great read.  They keep coming together.  Ash tries to save her and she counts on him until she almost loses him.  She tries to give him up to keep him safe.  Everyone can see how she feels.  It was fun to watch her fight a losing battle against her heart.

Piper is strong and smart.  She is a great character that reasons out what is really going on.  She and her Daemon friends come up with a plan to stop Samael.  Piper ends up fighting her own battles.  She doesn’t like how things end up.  The author lets Piper’s emotions shine through.  Her fear and anguish are front and center.  Her feelings for Ash are obvious for the reader.  The life and death battles provide a fast pace for the book.  I couldn’t put it down and read through it quickly.  I was sad when I read the last page.  I wanted to keep reading.  I give this addition to the series a 5 out of 5.
