Review: Fateful (Fateful #1) by Cheri Schmidt

Book Blurb

Danielle dreams of meeting Mr. Darcy...
Except it's 2017 and the 'Mr. Darcy' she meets has fangs.

A charming Englishman from the Victorian era,
An American young woman who can kick his ass, unless the moon reigns, that is.
When they kiss, a forgotten but familiar love reignites because they've met before.

A huge fan of Jane Austen, Danielle hopes to find her own Mr. Darcy when she leaves Colorado to attend art school in London. On only her second night there she gets lost and is threatened by a stalker who proves to be immune to her martial arts training. Before she is completely overpowered, she is then saved by Ethan Deveroux.

While Danielle does find the romance she seeks in Ethan, he's no Mr. Darcy. Her hero is held by a spell which fractures their chance at a happy ending. During the day Ethan is closer to mortal than immortal and isn't a danger to her. Yet, as the sun sets, the powerful magic of an ancient curse returns and the evil of that spell is revealed. When that magic begins, Danielle's fairytale romance ends because Ethan Deveroux is a vampire.

An innocent wish to find a man like the Jane Austen hero could turn deadly if Danielle trusts too much.

The magic and wonder of Harry Potter meets the melt-your-heart romance of the Vampire Diaries.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Danielle is going to art school in London and staying with her aunt and uncle.  She gets lost one of her first nights there after leaving the library.  She is stalked and almost attacked by a strange man.  As she flees she comes face to face with her savior.  She feels as though she knows him.  He helps her find her way back home safely.
Her rescuer was Ethan Deveraux.  He lives with Beon, a friend of Danielle’s uncle.  She sees him again at a party for her uncle.  He is kind and very protective of Danielle.  He also feels the pull and the recognition.  He realizes she has to be his mate.  Unfortunately, he has a secret of his own.  He is a vampire and she is a human.  That begins to cause issues in his world.  He also can’t be with her after dark, when his curse is stronger.  He fears what might happen.
However, he brings Danielle into his world during the day as they grow closer.  Ethan shares magical things with Danielle along with nightmares.  He is looking for a cure for his curse.  There is a prophesy out there mentioning a possible cure.  Ethan wants a future with Danielle and is determined to figure it out.
Unfortunately, there are those who will do anything to stop him.  They want Danielle gone and Ethan to suffer.  They are both on a course to save each other.
I liked the idea of this book but I felt Danielle was a confusing character.  She knew how to fight but her thoughts and actions really didn’t match that.  She should have had more confidence in herself.  I felt she didn’t have it.  She came across as the damsel in distress a bit too much.
I didn’t mind the old-fashioned vibe of the relationship between Danielle and Ethan.  It was sweet and my favorite part of the story. I also liked how Lucas kept coming and Ethan had to protect Danielle.  The scene during and after the ball was an attention getter.

The author had some great fight scenes and plot twists.  The ending was a bit surprising and I like what happened between Ethan and Danielle.  I wonder what the author will throw at the reader in the next book.  I give it a 3 out of 5.
