Review: Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Book Blurb

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Katy has moved to West Virginia with her mother.  Katy understands why her mother had to move after her father died.  Her new neighbors are about her age.  Dee and her brother Daemon live next door.  Daemon is immediately rude to her.  He is hot but an absolute jerk.  Dee, on the other hand, is extremely excited to meet her and become friends.  Katy likes Dee and a friendship starts to grow.  Daemon is determined to stop it.
Something weird is going on.  Daemon and Dee are keeping secrets.  Katy can feel it.  Daemon continues being a jerk and she finds herself unwelcome when it comes to Dee and Daemon’s group.  Katy refuses to be where they try to humiliate her and radiate hatred.  She finds her own friends.
Unfortunately, she has class with Daemon and he pokes her with his pencil daily. She is attracted to him but it becomes a hate/love relationship.  She refuses to give up her friendship with Dee.
Their secrets start to affect Katy’s life. Arun see how Katy glows and come after her.  Daemon feels he has to protect her.  She is shocked when she learns what is really going on.  Those in Dee’s and Daemon’s circle don’t trust her and don’t want her there.  They fear their secret will come out.  Katy realizes she is exactly what Daemon claims she is, a weakness.  She makes the decision to save her friends no matter what.

I really liked this book.  I’ve read this author before and liked the stories.  So I was excited to read this book.  I wasn’t disappointed.  There was a lot of mystery surrounding the brother and sister characters.  Dee was very sweet and starving for a friend.  Daemon was such a jerk.  You really wanted to punch him.  Your feelings really meshed with Katy’s.  She was so offended as she hasn’t earned the animosity.  You could see her frustration and her hurt when Daemon was mean.  It was total justification by the end when Daemon changed his tune a bit after Katy wanted to keep Dee safe.  I love how they pull together in the end and help each other.  The battle scenes are dark and dangerous.  The villains were dark shadows that are difficult for Katy to understand and fight.  She was an awesome character from the beginning.  How she handled things was fun for me to read.  She refused to let Daemon take an inch.  It was fun to read their arguments seeing the sparks flying.  A great read.  I give it a 5 out of 5.
